What is happening this weekend
The Ohio LinuxFest has a lot going on this weekend beyond the traditional 3 talks and expo. Read on to make sure you do not miss out on all of the fun!
Tonight at 7pm to 10pm we will have a welcome reception for anyone who is in town. There will be pizza and other refreshments in the Drury Inn & Suites Columbus Convention Center conference room in the lobby. Beat the lines on Saturday morning and check in early.
Friday during the day we will have a training program called "OLFU." Here we will have smaller talks for more personal attention. Classes topics include LPI Cram, Anti-Spam, Disaster Recovery, Documentation, and Storage. Registration for this program is available on site at the Greater Columbus Convention Center or online. Upgrades for those who are already registered for the Ohio LinuxFest is availble online. For more
information, visit the OLFU website
http://www.ohiolinux.org/olfu.html
Friday night starting at 6pm, the Ohio LinuxFest "pre-party" will also be a FARK.com party and a social gathering of the Linux Link Tech Show
podcast. The location will be Barley's Brewhouse which is just across the street from the convention center. Refreshment tickets will be available on a first come first serve basis. This event is sponsored by Pantek, an Open Source consulting company based in Cleveland, Ohio.
The Expo opens Saturday at 8am. Get there early to make sure you
have plenty of time to check in. Cofee will be provided to keep the neurons firing. The
morning keynote will begin at 9am. Following the keynote, there will be three tracks
of talks in the Silicon Mechanics, Google, and Linux International
ballrooms. Descriptions of these talks are available on the speakers page:
http://www.ohiolinux.org/speakers.html. A fourth track will be held on the Open
Source Solutions stage which is just around the corner
from the expo area. The talks there are listed on the Open Source Solutions page: http://www.ohiolinux.org/osss.html.
Saturday at 8pm to 12am the afterparty will be at Hyatt Recency Columbus
in the Union ballroom. This is the ballroom on the other side of the
bridge when you are coming from the convention center. Join us for
refreshments, hot food, and desert sponsored by Google. Entertainment will be arranged by Notacon.
Sunday at 1pm and 3:30pm we will have two testing opportunities for LPI
tests (level one, level two and Ubuntu). These tests will be at a discount for Ohio LinuxFest attendees. The test site is Drury Inn & Suites Columbus Convention Center conference room in the lobby. See Don Corbet at the LPI booth on Saturday for more information or visit the LPI website: http://www.ohiolinux.org/lpi.html

I have managed to check in
I have managed to check in from my hotel room in Columbus, OH. If you're not here, you're missing out!
Shhhhhh.... Don't tell anyone, but geeks really know how to party! Tonight was a night of Free Beer down at Barley's Brewery. I managed to sneak a pint of the brewery's homemade IPA - from the firkin. And then there was the barley wine. And did I mention hanging out with all the really cool folks?
Yeah, Paul Ferris, Greg Boehnlein, Richard Weait (Ontario LinuxFest Organizer), and John Maddog Hall were all on hand. I got to meet Paul's Dad as well. And there were the folks whom I had never met before, but were definitely on hand from Ohio, Indiana, Georgia, and South Carolina. Jeff Hatfield, from the Middle Georgia Linux Users Group, had managed to create his own penguin decoration for his laptop using some surplus aircraft decal material he had.
I got to know Joe "Zonker" Brockmeier a little better this evening, and met an experienced lady UNIX admin from right here in Columbus who is attending OLF for the first time. She's been in computing longer than I have, and has two Masters and two undergraduate degrees. She was hanging out with Jason Elwell (LP Software), Greg, and myself down at Barley's. Mike Meffie, one of OLF's sponsors took a break from checking people in to come hang out, too.
We did not manage to free any software, but definitely freed the IPA from the firkin in less than 2 hours - a record at Barley's. O.k., I only had a couple - I don't know who drank all the rest - might have been Greg. ;-) There were probably 150 or so people on hand. Barley's manager - great guy, by the way - said the OLF crowd was definitely over the top for a typical Friday night. Meanwhile, some mysterious stranger from Digium pitched in to help with the bar tab.
Well, I better hit the hay - got to sleep sometime! Tomorrow we'll fill you in on the excitement from the conference and the after party. Which reminds me. Greg made an interesting observation - it's not about the community; it's about the free beer. I need to mention this notion to the Charlotte Linux User Group and see what kind of response we get. I bet people would drive to Charlotte from Ohio to attend our meetings if they knew the beer was free!
