Community Outreach - Canned Food Drive

Ohio Linuxfest is about community. Ostensibly, that means software... Linux and Open Source to be more specific. By definition, however, community extends far beyond the reaches of software and surrounds us in every aspect of life. Community also brings with it a responsibility to contribute resources for the benefit of all.

With that concept in mind, I am writing to let you know about our community outreach efforts for this year. Last year, we took the excess food items from the conference and donated them to a homeless shelter in the Columbus area. That act allowed the resources of one community to cross over and help another. This year, we would like to take that idea a little further and collect non-perishable canned food items for the Columbus Salvation Army to help feed needy families for the Holiday Season.

N2Net has offered to provide a collection point at their expo booth to make collection easy; simply bring a can of food with you and drop it off. If 100 people can contribute to this effort, N2Net will donate and additional $250 to the Salvation Army. If everyone at OLF brings one canned food item, we will easily surpass that goal and show that the Linux community really can make a difference by providing food for needy families. I cannot think of a better way to demonstrate the power of community!
